President Ram Nath Kovind presented Padma Shri to Smt. Saalumarada Thimmakka for Social work, aged 107. She received this award due to his social work done towards nature. The strict protocol of Rashtrapati Bhavan could not stop the 107-year-old lady from giving blessings to the President.
Smt. Saalumarada Thimmakka is an environmentalist from Karnataka and is well known as Vruksha Mathe and is well known for planting banyan trees within an area of 4km stretched from the highway from her village Hulikal to Kudur.
She broke the protocol during the investiture ceremony going on in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. After handling Padma Shri to her, when the president asked her to look at the camera. She put her hand on the president’s head and gave a heartfelt blessing. She has planted around 4000 trees, including 380 banyan trees in an area of around 4 km, starting from her village to the highway.
She was honoured with other personalities including Gautam Gambhir and many other. In a ceremony, she was dressed in a light green saree with a smiling face and tripundra on her forehead. She represents the resilience and determination and perseverance of the ordinary citizen, especially of women. She has planted these trees in a period of 65 years. Her husband passed away in 1991.
The couple arduously worked in the field during the day, planted trees, cared for them. The couple started this work by planting 10 saplings in a year. Then year by year, they increased the number of trees and after a hard work of 65 years, they are able to plant around 4000 trees.
They passionately followed this rule- “INCREASE AFFORESTATION, DECREASE DEFORESTATION”.
